With a collection of over 100,000 books, the Von der Heydt Museum’s art library is the largest in the Bergisches Land region. Open to all as a research library and information centre, it can be accessed free of charge.
As a reference library, research and reading can be conducted on site, but books cannot be borrowed. The librarian is available to answer questions and assist with literature compilation, fact-finding, image research, and so on. Visitors can access free Wi-Fi, allowing them to use the library as a place to work and study with their own devices.
Thanks to a systematic arrangement (by subject group), the book collection is easily accessible. Targeted searches for titles, authors or keywords are also possible via the library catalogue (OPAC).
The collection profile clearly shows a focus on artist monographs, including research-relevant catalogues of works, important exhibition catalogues, dissertations and unpublished small publications. As well as publications on nationally known artists, the collection includes unpublished materials on contemporary or regionally known artists for whom no other texts are available. Other important segments of the library’s holdings include encyclopaedias, thematic literature on all genres and periods of art history, exhibition and inventory catalogues, auction catalogues, and journals.
The collection is supplemented by databases of Wuppertal artists (now with over 2,700 names) and of all exhibitions held by the museum from its foundation in 1902 to the present day.
